What is Omiya Bonsai Village?

The area between JR Doro Station (one train stop from JR Omiya Station) and Tobu Urban Park Line (Noda Line) Omiya Koen Station, on the north side of Omiya Park, is known as one of the best bonsai areas in Japan, and is home to "Omiya Bonsai Village" consisting of five bonsai gardens, each with its own characteristics, and the "Omiya Bonsai Art Museum," the first public bonsai museum in the world. The Omiya Bonsai Museum is the world's first public bonsai museum.
There are many ways to enjoy the Omiya Bonsai Village, a sacred place for bonsai. If you are visiting the village for the first time, we recommend that you start your tour at the museum, where you can learn about bonsai and the history of the village.

It takes about 7 minutes on foot from JR Doro Station. The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, the world's first public bonsai art museum, opened in 2010 as a base facility for sightseeing in Omiya Bonsai Village.
At the entrance of the museum, you will be welcomed by a seasonal bonsai pot. After passing through the entrance, you will find an exhibition room that introduces bonsai culture and the history of Bonsai Village, and a bonsai garden with about 60 bonsais on display.
There is also an area where you can view the bonsai from all 360 degrees, so you can see the difference between the front and back of the bonsai. It is said that when looking at a bonsai, you can enjoy the feeling of a large tree if you look at it from the bottom after you have assessed the front side!
The museum store also sells very cute bonsai masking tape and local cider "Omiya Bonsai da! and other items are available at the museum shop. Please check them out as well.

Five bonsai gardens, each with its own unique bonsai

After leaving the Omiya Bonsai Museum, walk south for a few minutes and you will arrive at the central area of the Bonsai Village.
There are five bonsai gardens in this area: Fuyou-en, Kyuka-en, Seikou-en, Mansei-en, and Fujiju-en.
Each of these five bonsai gardens has its own unique characteristics, so please enjoy walking around the town!
For a break, the Bonsai Four Seasons House is conveniently located almost in the middle of the Bonsai Village.

Fujiki-en, where you can also enjoy bonsai classes

The Fujishien was opened in 1931 by Motosuke Hamano, who trained under Tomekichi Kato, the second generation bonsai master of Vine Seien. It is a famous garden that has produced many pine and oak bonsai of various sizes and has produced many famous bonsai artists. Just like a museum, there are a variety of bonsai of different sizes, bark, branching, and rooting, which can be viewed one by one. Visitors can also enjoy listening to the expert advice of the bonsai growers, such as "adjusting the size of the pot to make the bonsai look bigger," "using wire to change the shape," and "pruning to prevent the bonsai from growing too large. Bonsai classes have been offered since 1966 so that even beginners can enjoy bonsai.

How to enjoy Bonsai Village

The bonsai garden is crammed with bonsai of all sizes. The bonsai garden is open to the public so that visitors can enjoy Japanese culture in a casual manner, but please be careful not to damage the bonsai or disturb the artisans working there.
You can also purchase bonsai that you like. There are palm-sized miniature bonsai that can be cared for even if you live alone or do not have a garden.
The Bonsai Museum and Bonsai Garden are closed on Thursdays. Both museums are subject to temporary closure, so please check the latest information before departure.
The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum is scheduled to be closed from November 2024 to March 2025 for renovation of the garden to improve the bonsai display and visitor viewing environment due to the recent extreme heat.
