What is Shuzenji Onsen like?

Shuzenji Onsen is the most historic hot spring resort on the Izu Peninsula, selected as one of the 100 best hot springs in Japan. The area is famous for its autumn foliage, which is usually at its best from mid-November to early December, and the maple forests in Shuzenji Nature Park, where about 1,000 maple trees grow in a 1 hectare area, are especially worth seeing!

Shuzenji Temple, from which Shuzenji Onsen takes its name, is a 1200-year-old temple founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai, founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Entering the temple grounds through the temple gate, visitors will find about 10 maple trees planted, providing a unique temple atmosphere where visitors can take their time to enjoy the autumn foliage. The combination of the towering bell tower and the autumn leaves is especially stunning and overwhelming!

It is said that when Emperor Taisho visited Shuzenji when he was the Crown Prince, he was told that this garden is the best garden in the Tokai region. Paths have been created in the garden so that visitors can go around the garden and enjoy the view of the garden from various angles by going up and down the slopes. The garden is open to the public for a limited period during the fall foliage season, so if you visit Shuzenji in autumn, be sure to take a tour.
