Kochia turns bright red in autumn!

In National Hitachi Seaside Park, the entire area of Miharashi Hill is covered in kochia in autumn. Kochia is an annual herb belonging to the family of the daylily (formerly known as the family Acanthaceae) and originates from the arid lands of Eurasia. Its Japanese name is "broom grass," and in the past, its stems were dried to make brooms. The fruit is called "tonburi," or "caviar of the field. (The lime green kochia, which has been growing in the summer sun since early July, has a lovely round shape and is soft to the touch. The gradation of green and red colors that change from day to day is also attractive. The bright red autumn leaves turning the Miharashi Hill into a bright red are truly a spectacular sight.
