The Sado Gold and Silver Mine is a historical site that tells the 400-year history of the Sado Gold and Silver Mine. During the Edo period, the mine was the largest gold and silver mine in Japan and one of the world's largest producers, supporting the finances of the shogunate. Many people from all over Japan came to Sado for the gold and silver mines, creating the mining city of Aikawa, where about 50,000 people lived at its peak.
Sado is said to be the only mine in Japan that conducted everything from mining to koban production!

There are various sightseeing courses and tours to enjoy such a Sado gold mine.
The Sodayukou Edo Gold Mine Picture Scroll Course, which is also the basic course, faithfully recreates the mining operations of the time using dolls.
The Doyukoukou Meiji Government Mine Course preserves and exhibits the tunnels, trolleys, and machinery that were used for approximately 100 years from the Meiji period until the mine ceased operations in 1989.
The "Island Mine" course, a walk-through attraction that allows visitors to experience the mine while walking through the mine, is also recommended for children!

The symbol of modern heritage, "the largest floating ore dressing plant in the East
The Kitazawa area of Aikawa is home to a cluster of facilities (national historic sites) that contributed to the modernization of mining, including a power plant and thickener (a facility for separating muddy ore and water). The flotation beneficiation method, which was originally used in the copper production process, was applied to the extraction of gold and silver, and was the first practical application of this technology in Japan. The plant was the first of its kind in Japan, and was praised as "the best in the East" because it could process more than 50,000 tons of ore in a single month.
