What is the Kuji Autumn Festival?

The Kuji Autumn Festival, with a history of over 650 years, is held every year from the third Friday to Sunday in September (Thursday is the eve of the festival). Large roadside floats and lively portable shrines parade through the main streets of Kuji City, attracting many tourists every year. The festival is dedicated to three shrines, the Grand Shrine, Akiba Shrine, and Tatsumiyama Shrine, and the main attraction of the festival are the gorgeous floats elaborately designed by each of the float groups in the city. The most impressive feature of the festival is the float, which is all handmade and has a handmade karakuri style, with dolls and decorations that rise up to 12 meters as they move up and down, left to right, and side to side.
