Sand Craft in Mitane, held annually in Mitane Town, Akita Prefecture for the 29th time this year, is a sand sculpture making and exhibition event held at Kamaya-hama Beach, one of the "100 best bathing beaches in Japan" certified by the Ministry of the Environment, taking advantage of the blessed nature of Mitane Town facing the Sea of Japan! Kamaya-hama Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Akita Prefecture with clean water, and was selected as one of the "100 best beaches in Japan" by the Ministry of the Environment. It is also called "Sunset Beach Kamaya-hama" because of its beautiful sunset. In addition to the beach, there is a campground, a hot spring within a 5-minute drive, and restaurants and supermarkets nearby, so the beach is crowded with locals and tourists.

The 29th Sand Craft 2025 in Mitane

Sand Craft is a sand sculpture making and exhibition event held at Kamaya-hama Beach, one of the 100 best beaches in Japan certified by the Ministry of the Environment, taking advantage of the blessed nature of the town of Mitane facing the Sea of Japan. The first event was held in the former Hachiryu Town, and this year marks its 29th anniversary.

The first Sand Craft was held in the former Hachiryu-cho, and this year marks the 29th. Every year, a theme is chosen for the sand crafts, and many artworks are created at Kamayahama Beach. Last year, the theme for the 28th Sand Craft was "Myths and Legends of the World," and the works were based on myths and legends from countries such as India, Greece, Egypt, and Japan. A total of 25 sand sculptures, including the main sand sculpture over 3 meters high, as well as medium and small sand sculptures, were exhibited at the venue, and on July 27, stage events and fireworks made the event very exciting.

Sand sculptures that will be over 3 meters high

The main sand sculpture in the sand sculpture exhibition section is a large work that stands more than 3 meters tall. The main sand sculpture is created within a set period of about two weeks. In case of bad weather, it is not possible to produce the sand sculpture, so it is sometimes produced in a shorter period of time. The process is a repetitive process of pouring a special coagulant over the sand and scraping it off. The coagulant is only applied to a few millimeters of the surface, so if strong force is applied, the piece will collapse. The detailed work of making patterns is truly a divine work!

On the first day after the sand sculptures are completed, an event will be held. There will be activities in the ocean such as jet ski de banana board, "Sand Sculpting Experience" where you can make your own sand sculpture, candle holder making experience, and a fireworks display at sea as a finale.
