8:30 Depart from "Lamp no Yado Aoni Onsen

After checking out, take the "Aoni Shuttle Bus," for which you have made reservations, to Nijinoko. From Nijinoko, take the Konan Bus Nijinoko Line and get off at "Tsugaru Densetsu Kogeikan Mae" (Tsugaru Folklore Crafts Museum).

Reservations are required to use the Aoni Shuttle Bus. Please make a reservation in advance from the official website of Aoni Onsen.

9:15 Visit "Tsugaru Kokeshi Doll Museum" and "Tsugaru Folklore Crafts Museum" to see the craftsmanship.

Tsugaru Kokeshi Doll Museum

The Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum displays approximately 4,000 traditional kokeshi dolls from 12 different lines in Japan. Traditional kokeshi dolls are traditional handicrafts from the Tohoku region, and craftsmen called "kojin" (traditional kokeshi craftsmen) carefully make each kokeshi doll, from molding to painting.

Here at the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum, visitors can observe up close how the craftsmen of the Tsugaru kokeshi, one of the 12 lines of traditional kokeshi dolls that originated in Nuruyu, actually create their kokeshis. Please take your time to enjoy the skillful handling of the planer and the careful painting of the kokeshi dolls. You can also talk with the craftsmen.

For those who want to make kokeshi dolls themselves, we recommend the "painting experience. You can freely paint on the wooden base created by the craftsman. Even if you are not good at painting, the craftsman will teach you carefully, so don't worry! Please make your own original kokeshi doll.

You can ask the kokeshi craftsman during the demonstration to try your hand at painting, but it may not be possible depending on reservations made on the day of the demonstration. Please call the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum directly to make a reservation.

There is also a "jumbo kokeshi" that stands 4.2 meters high, and kokeshis painted by celebrities such as Shiko Munakata, a printmaker who is the pride of Aomori Prefecture, and comedian Tetsuro Izukawa, so be sure to take your time and visit.

Kokeshi Doll Workshop "tsuN'agaru

If you want to buy a kokeshi doll for yourself, we recommend "Kokeshi Workshop tsuN'agaru" at the Tsugaru Folklore Crafts Museum, which is a short walk from the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum. Here you can buy traditional Kokeshi dolls including local Tsugaru Kokeshi dolls and cute Kokeshi goods. You will find a lot of kokeshi dolls in the store, which will make your eyes wander around.

Tsugaru Folklore and Crafts Museum" is a complex facility that includes "Kokeshi Doll Workshop tsuN'agaru" and a footbath that anyone can use.

Among them, "Tsugaru Lacquer Workshop" is a must-visit place. Here you can purchase various Tsugaru-nuri products, which boast a history of about 300 years in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture. You can feel the careful handiwork of the craftsmen who repeatedly paint and polish Tsugaru-nuri.

11:30 Have a healthy vegan lunch at the stylish cafe "Yobisha

After taking your time to experience traditional crafts, take a break for lunch at Yobisha, a 10-minute walk from the Tsugaru Folklore Crafts Museum.

13:40 Fine Tsugaru Karasugi Pottery made in the world's longest climbing kiln

Once you have had your fill, take the Konan Bus on the Nijinoko Line from the "Kaminuruyu" bus stop, a 3-minute walk from Yobisha, to "Tsugaru Ujyoyaki" (Tsugaru Karasujo-yaki). It is about a 10-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, Yamagata Nursery School.

Tsugaru Ujyoyaki is also known for the world's longest climbing kiln, which is registered in the Guinness World Records at 103 meters. Here, visitors can purchase pieces made with an emphasis on "natural glaze" created by water, soil, wood, and flames, as well as view a collection of old ceramics collected by the potter, Rikatsura Imai.
