The Hydrangea Pond is a must-see!
Michinoku Hydrangea Garden is located in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, on a site about four times the size of the Tokyo Dome. More than 50,000 hydrangeas of over 400 varieties bloom in this vast area.

The best hydrangea garden in Japan, born from the reputation of local people

The vast hydrangea garden was not originally intended for sightseeing, but was planted about 40 years ago by a mountain owner who brought hydrangeas from his garden and planted them in a forest where he had cleared a road for pruning and thinning, thinking that planting some flowers would bring him peace of mind during his work. The plants grew year by year, and local people began to come to see them. Gradually, people from various places began to visit, and the garden was opened as "Michinoku Hydrangea Garden. The hydrangea garden became "the best hydrangea garden in Japan" certified by the Japan Hydrangea Association.
Hydrangeas spread out in the hydrangea field.

Numerous hydrangeas to be seen in the garden

The time required to look around the entire garden is about two hours.
In the cool cedar-mountain air, as you walk along in a hiking mood, you will see many different varieties of hydrangeas. Visitors can enjoy hydrangeas from different production areas such as Shikoku and Kyushu, early and late blooming hydrangeas, and a variety of colors such as blue, purple, white, and pink. There are also many elaborate elements to enjoy, such as the "Yamamoto Corner," where visitors can see valuable hydrangeas collected by Takeomi Yamamoto, the first chairman of the Japan Hydrangea Association, and a handmade photo spot.

It is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes! Convenient carts are available.

If you use public transportation, it takes about 20 minutes from the nearest bus stop to the entrance of the hydrangea garden. In addition, the sidewalks in the garden are well maintained and easy to walk on, but it is still in the mountains, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. During the Hydrangea Festival, carts with a driver (for a fee) are available by reservation, so those with walking difficulties and the elderly can enjoy the park with peace of mind. During the festival, there is a cafeteria and coffee shop, and restrooms are scattered throughout the park for a pleasant stroll.
