The Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Matsuri is characterized by the elegance of a traditional Tanabata festival, while at the same time skillfully incorporating the trends and topics of the times. The streets of the festival site are filled with Tanabata decorations. The main venue is filled with gorgeous decorations, some of which are over 10 meters high. There are also unique decorations that incorporate popular characters and other trends.

Hiratsuka City will be filled with the color of the Tanabata Festival! Every year, the festival attracts many people, from children to adults, who come to see the gorgeous bamboo decorations and other decorations.

The sound of the Tanabata decorations fluttering in the wind is cool and refreshing.
Hiratsuka's Tanabata Festival was held as a "reconstruction festival" in July 1950, soon after the end of the war, to revitalize the city, which had been devastated by an air raid in July 1945 that left 70% of the central city area as a burnt-out ruins.
The following year, in July 1951, the first Tanabata Festival was held under a new name, modeled after Sendai's Tanabata Festival. The festival has played an important role in wishing for the development of various industries and as a place to introduce Hiratsuka to the rest of the country, and today it has grown to become one of the most famous Tanabata festivals in Japan.
Why don't you make unforgettable Tanabata memories at this festival that carries on the wishes of the people who aimed for the reconstruction of the town after the war? Please come and visit with your family and friends!
