Morioka: The Kitakami River and Mount Iwate seen from Morioka City

What is Morioka, a city you should "still" visit in 2024?

In the spring of 2023, Morioka City in Iwate Prefecture, which had not received much attention as a tourist destination, became a world-famous city. This is because Morioka was selected as one of the "52 Places to Visit in 2023" by the New York Times in the United States. The effect was tremendous, and many tourists from Japan and abroad came to visit the city. However, a boom that comes out of nowhere can pass quickly.
Morioka has a lot of materials to fully enjoy sightseeing, such as historical buildings and long-established stores. Morioka is a city with beautiful seasonal changes that is fun to visit again and again.
It would be a shame to see Morioka end up as a boom town. Morioka is a city that should be visited even in 2024.
In this issue, we will introduce Morioka, a city that can be visited on foot.

There is also a corner where you can enjoy a video, so it is recommended for those who are not so interested in history. The plaza outside is also a venue for various events, such as gourmet meals and crafts, depending on the season. If you are lucky enough to come across an event, be sure to stop by!

The valuable "Morioka Castle Ruins Stone Wall Restoration Work" that you should see in 2024!

Morioka can be enjoyed in any season, but there are some things you can only see now. If you don't see it now, you may not see it until 300 years from now. There is such a precious big project going on in Morioka right now.
In this project, which began in 2021, the stone wall was dismantled, 343 stones were taken out, and in May 2023, the stones began to be re-stacked so that they are at their original inclination. The work is said to be extremely difficult because any change in the position or stacking method of the stones will cause misalignment. The stones that have been removed and placed within easy reach are also valuable and can only be seen now. The work is scheduled to be completed around November of this year, so even though you will be able to see the completed stone wall from now on, this is the only time you will be able to see the stone wall under restoration.
Another attraction of Morioka Castle Ruins Park is that you can enjoy the different faces of the park throughout the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscape in winter.
