What is the history of the Nijuma Road?

Hello everyone. This is the Hokkaido Communications Department. Today I would like to introduce you to the Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival. Today, we would like to introduce you to the "Nijuma Road Cherry Blossom Lane" located in Shizunai, Shin-hidaka Town, Hokkaido. Please take a look at the magnificent rows of cherry trees.
The straight road where you can see all the way to the end.
The "ma" in "Nijuken Road" refers to the width of the road. One ken is about 1.82 meters, so 20 ken is about 36 meters. In 1872, Kiyotaka Kuroda, the Director General of the Hokkaido Development Office, visited Hidaka and decided that the Hidaka region, with its little snowfall and abundant wild grass, was ideal for improving horses, so he plotted out a pasture. Cherry trees were planted along the road for the Imperial Family to visit the ranch, and they became the "Nijuken Road Cherry Trees" in Shizunai, Shinhidaka-cho.

Over 2,000 cherry trees line the 7 km straight road.

The sunlight filtering through the cherry trees is beautiful.
The "Nijuma Road Cherry Blossom Lane" with over 2,000 cherry trees blooming along a 7-kilometer straight road is a sight to behold. The 7-kilometer straight road also shows the vastness of Hokkaido.

Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival" will be held again this year.

Most of the cherry trees along the road are Ezo-Yamazakura, followed by Kasumi Sakura and Miyama Sakura. As the name suggests, the kasumi sakura cherry trees look like a misty haze when seen from a distance. The Miyama-zakura, like the Ezo-yama-zakura, blooms with both flowers and leaves at the same time, but the leaves do not turn red, are small, and whitish in color. This year, the 61st "Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival" will be held, which is expected to attract many cherry blossom lovers. The festival will be held for six days from Sunday, April 28 to Friday, May 3, 2024. For more information, please check the official website of the Shin-hidaka Town Hall. We look forward to seeing you all there.
