Nagaozan Myorakuji Temple, where approximately 1,000 hydrangeas of 28 varieties cover the entire temple grounds

Nagaozan Myorakuji Temple, also known as "Hydrangea Temple," is the pride of Kawasaki City and is a historic temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, where Minamoto no Yoritomo's half-brother, Ano Zensei, is said to have prayed and had a close relationship with the temple. From mid to late June every year, approximately 1,000 hydrangeas of 28 varieties bloom in a variety of colors, creating a magical space that makes you feel as if you have wandered into a picture book.

The temple is located in Tama-ku, Kawasaki City, on a small hill called Nagao Hills, which overlooks the Tama River and the city of Kawasaki.

Kakio's hydrangea temple "Asozan Jokeiji", one of the 100 best places for flowers in Kanagawa

For a short trip, we will also introduce "Asozan Jokeiji Temple," a famous hydrangea viewing spot located about 30 minutes by car from Nagaozan Myorakuji Temple. Known locally as "Kakio's Hydrangea Temple," Jokeiji Temple was founded in 1615 as a temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. A nun was sent from Denzuuin, the family temple of Tokugawa Ieyasu's mother, to protect Jokeiji for generations.

The village of Kakio is surrounded by rich nature. As if blending in with the scenery, Jokeiji Temple has carefully preserved its traditional hermitage-like atmosphere. It is a place where quiet time flows, gently healing the hearts of visitors. Designated as one of the 100 best places to view flowers in Kanagawa, the temple is home to seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms, daffodils, wildflowers, skunk cabbages, hydrangeas, higanbana, bush clovers, plum blossoms, camellias, and camellias throughout the year.
