The ruins of Honjo Castle are now known to the public as Honjo Park. About 1,000 Someiyoshino cherry trees are planted in the park, and they bloom relatively early in Akita Prefecture. On fine days, Mt. Chokai can be seen, and there is a photo spot where visitors can take pictures of the cherry blossoms and snowy Mt. Chokai at the same time. And from April 4, the Honjo Cherry Blossom Festival will be held.

History of Honjo Castle

Honjo Castle, also called "Ozaki Castle" or "Tsurumai Castle," prospered as the residence of the Honjo clan. It is famous for its "earthen mound castle" style, in which the castle was fortified with earthen mounds and moats, without stone walls or a castle tower. The castle site was built by Honjo Toyozenmori Mitsushige, and was developed as a historic site park in the Taisho era (1912-1926). The uppermost level is the Honmaru (main citadel), which is about 25 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by earthen mounds. The second level, where playground equipment is located, is called the second circle, and the flat area where the city hall, plaza, etc. are located is called the third circle. No structures from the Edo period remain as they were burnt down by fire during the Boshin War.

Honjo Cherry Blossom Festival

Honjo Sakura Festival will be held from April 4 (Fri.) to 20 (Sun.). During the festival, stalls will be set up and the cherry blossoms will be illuminated at night until 9:00 p.m., allowing visitors to enjoy the cherry blossoms at night. On April 12 (Sat.) and 13 (Sun.), there will be a variety of events.

Yuri-Honjo Spring Flower Tour

In Yuri-Honjo City, the spring flower tour will begin on April 5.
In addition to the Honjo Cherry Blossom Festival introduced above, there will be a cherry blossom festival from April 4 (Fri.) to 20 (Sun.) at [Roadside Station "Nishime" and "Herb World AKITA"] in the Nishime area.
A yellow cherry blossom festival from April 26 (Sat.) to May 4 (Sun.) at [Yashio Ikoinomori] in the Higashiyuri area.
A spring flower festival from mid to late April at [Along the Imo River] in the Ouchi and Honjo areas. The festival is held from mid to late April in the Ouchi and Honjo areas along the Imogawa River.
