Marukan Building Dining Hall in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. The Marukan Building cafeteria is located on the 6th floor of the Marukan Building, in an excellent location overlooking Hanamaki City. The Marukan Building, which houses the Marukan Building Grand Cafeteria, opened in 1973 as the Marukan Department Store and was temporarily closed in June 2016 due to the passage of time and aging of the building. However, it was revived in February 2017, thanks to a signature drive led by local high school students who love the Marukan Building.
The Marukan Building underwent a dramatic revival about eight months after its closure. In this issue, we would like to introduce one of the roots of many local people's wish for the revival of Marukan Building, the Marukan Building Grand Cafeteria.

The Marukan Building Grand Cafeteria, which has undergone a dramatic revival and still attracts many people. The 560-seat diner overlooking the city of Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, still retains the retro Showa-era atmosphere it had when it was first established. The orange split bowl cases and the slightly illuminated lighting in the restaurant are just like the Showa-era retro atmosphere itself.

The Marukan Building cafeteria offers more than 100 menu items, including ramen, Western-style food, sushi, etc., and attracts a wide range of customers, from children and the elderly to businessmen on their lunch break. One of the most popular items on the menu is the 10-tier rolled soft-serve ice cream. It is something different from ordinary soft-serve ice cream...yes, the ice cream is rolled up into 10 layers! The taste is outstanding, with a moist and creamy flavor.

The first is Marukan Ramen. The spicy ankake ramen with lots of big ingredients is so good that once you try it, you will be addicted to it. It is an original ramen with starchy sauce that you won't find anywhere else. Retort packs of Marukan Ramen are also available, making them perfect as souvenirs!

(2) The "Napoli Katsu" is a hearty and hearty dish! Neapolitan Katsu!

The second is the popular and hearty Neapolitan Katsu, a combination of Neapolitan and pork cutlet. When it was first established, it was often chosen as a special occasion menu item, but now it has become a signature menu item that most people have had at least once because of its delicious taste and volume.

(3) Hanamaki's famous gyoza (dumplings) "Yorai Kyoja's Gyoza Set Meal"!

Third, you can enjoy dumplings from Yarai Shang, a long-established Hanamaki dumpling restaurant established in 1955, at Marukan Building Dining Hall. The kitchen staff, who have inherited Yalai Shang's old-fashioned recipe, make the dumplings by hand from the skin up. The dumplings are small in size with a crispy surface. They are light and refreshing with a lot of vegetables, so you can finish them easily.

(4) Handmade pudding parfait

The fourth is a pudding parfait using handmade pudding made with traditional taste and manufacturing methods. The handmade pudding is firm and not too sweet to go well with the popular soft-serve ice cream. We also have other sweets such as chocolate parfait, banana parfait, and anmitsu (sweet bean paste)! It is hard to choose what to order.
