Hotel built on the site of a former railway line
This month's article introduces the concept of JR Inn Hakodate, "a hotel that keeps the memory of the railroad and the ferry".
JR Inn Hakodate is located on the site where there used to be a line leading from Hakodate Station to the Seiko-Hakodate Liaison Boat.
Until March 1988, when the Seikan Tunnel opened, the Seikan Liaison Ship, which ran between Aomori and Hakodate, had a line laid inside the ship that allowed freight cars to be loaded directly onto the ship. Therefore, there was a railroad track from JR Hakodate Station to the ferry.
The head mark greets you as you enter the entrance.

On the wall are panels of the Seikan Liaison Boat taken by Asako Shirai, a former JNR cameraman who now serves as vice president of the "Seikan Liaison Boat Association.
The "Pillow Corner" at JR Inn Hakodate offers a selection of pillows made of different materials.
A nostalgic "black pillow" from the Seikan Liaison Boat
This black pillow is a faithful reproduction of a real pillow that was used on the Seikan Liaison Ship, using the same materials and dimensions. The black pillows were made by local craftsmen in Hakodate with the cooperation of the Hakodate Seiko-Hakodate Liaison Ship Memorial Museum Mashu-maru, a non-profit organization that operates the Hakodate Seiko-Hakodate Liaison Ship Memorial Museum.
