Spring in Mito starts with plum blossoms! The 128th Mito Plum Blossom Festival

The 128th Mito Ume Festival will be held at Kairakuen Garden and Koudoukan in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, from February 10 (Sat) to March 17 (Sun), 2024. Kairakuen is a vast garden with 3,000 ume trees of about 100 varieties planted. This is a historic plum festival held at Kairakuen and the Koudoukan, a national important cultural property, which has 800 plum trees of about 60 varieties. Since there are various varieties of plums in Kairakuen, visitors can enjoy viewing the plums for a long period of time in "early bloom," "mid bloom," and "late bloom.
The Mito Plum Blossom Festival is held at Kairakuen Garden and Koudoukan in Mito City. Kairakuen was built by Nariaki Tokugawa, the ninth lord of the Mito Domain, as a place to "enjoy the company of the people" and Kodokan as a "Mito Domain School for the study of literature and military arts.
In 2015, Kairakuen was recognized as a "Heritage of Education in Modern Japan - The Origin of the Spirit of Learning and Civility", a Japan In 2015, it was recognized as a "Japanese Heritage" site that preserves Japanese culture and traditions.

During the "Ume Festival," events are also held at night. During the "Ume Festival," events will be held at night as well, so that visitors can enjoy the fantastic night view of ume blossoms, which is different from the daytime view.
