This year marks the 10th year since the re-planting of trees in Yoshino Plum Blossom Park, which will host a plum blossom festival from February 21 (Sat.) to March 22 (Sun.), 2026. Yoshino Plum Village has once again begun its journey as a famous ume viewing spot, and visitors can see the ume trees that continue to grow in their 10th year.

Ome City is the only municipality in Japan with "ume" in its name. From the JR Ome Line's Hinatawada Station, cross the Tama River to Yoshino Kaido, where you will find Yoshino Plum Village. This area is called "Yoshino Baigo" because many farmers used to cultivate ume plum trees. The center of the area is "Ume Park. Visitors can enjoy the view of approximately 1,200 plum trees in full bloom.

Twelve years ago, all ume trees were cut down.

In 2009, Yoshino Plum Village was the first place in Japan where the ume (Japanese apricot) ring crest virus was discovered in Ome City, and in 2014, approximately 1,700 ume trees in "Ume Park" were cut down to eradicate the ume ring crest virus. The cutting down of all the trees in "Ume Park," which had been selected as the best ume viewing spot in Japan, made the news at the time, and many ume lovers in Ome were heard saying, "I feel sorry for the ume trees" and "When will we be able to see the ume trees again? Step by step, we are taking steps toward restoring the park to its former spectacular beauty.

The "Ume Park" marks the 10th year since the re-planting of trees

In order to restore the park to its former glory, the residents and the local government joined forces to begin re-planting trees in 2016, and this year marks the 10th year of the project. Although the trees are still small, they have recovered to bear pretty pink and white flowers, and each of the first six ume trees planted in 2016 has been given a suitable name from the Manyoshu (The Anthology of Myriad Leaves) to symbolize the revival and recovery, and a signboard and explanation board have been installed. In addition to the plum blossoms, the beautifully landscaped park is also home to other flowers, such as buttercups and waxwings, which delight visitors. At Yoshino Plum Village, which has once again begun its journey as a famous plum blossom viewing spot, visitors can see the plum blossoms that have continued to grow for the past 10 years. The best time to see the plum blossoms at Yoshino Plum Village usually starts around the end of February. And this year again, the Yoshino Plum Blossom Festival will be held from February 21 (Sat.) to March 22 (Sun.), 2026, centering on the "Plum Blossom Park". Various events will be held, including a stamp rally, Ome Gourmet Marche, Tokyo Local Sake Festival, Umeshu Festival, etc. On Sunday, March 8, the "Ume Festival for Citizens" will be held on Jindaihashi-dori, the main street of Yoshino Plum Village, with a parade, lion dance, Ome taiko drum and other performances to liven up the venue. In addition, a pre-opening event will be held from February 14 (Sat.) to February 20 (Fri.) to commemorate the 10th year of ume tree replanting.
