Kerala Kitchen" Biryani and other popular dishes
This summer, we have often heard the words "extremely hot" and "extremely hot" in Japanese. Although the calendar says it is already autumn and we can feel a hint of autumn in the mornings and evenings, the lingering summer heat is still lingering. So, how can we survive this heat? Sweating in a sauna or bedrock bath is good, but how about eating a spicy curry to get sweaty? The common point is the image of sweat oozing out of your pores. It's a strange and refreshing experience, isn't it? We would like to introduce a new restaurant specializing in South Indian cuisine that has just opened in Kawasaki.
Mr. Kalil Krishnan, owner

Kerala Kitchen", a restaurant specializing in South Indian cuisine, opened on August 5, 2023 (Sat) in the "LA CITTADELLA" commercial complex in front of JR Kawasaki Station. This is the second branch of Kerala Kitchen after the Shin-Maruko branch in Kawasaki, which was selected as one of the "Asia Ethnic East 100 Best Restaurants 2022" on the food log. La Cittadella's limited menu and "Today's Special," an original menu only available that day, are also popular. Every day, the owner, Mr. Kariil Krishnan, thinks of the next day's limited menu and shares it with the chef. The owner's personality and the kindness of the chef and staff are evident in his friendly smile as he shows us the unglazed jugs with condensation on them.

Commitment to and desire for authentic Kerala

The counter inside the restaurant has a warm wooden feel and is lined with beautiful unglazed tableware and spices.

The design, grain, and color of the tables and chairs differ between the warmth of the wood inside the restaurant and on the open terrace. All of the unglazed tableware is original with the "Kerala Kitchen" logo engraved on each piece. The spices, banana leaves, straws made from sugarcane, rice for each dish, and original tableware are all shipped directly from Kerala, along with the authentic Kerala winds. Incidentally, the chef is also from Kerala. You can feel the charm of Kerala, South India, in the attention to detail in the restaurant.

Biryani" from Tarasheri, Kerala, the most famous region in India

Shrimp Biryani" - you can enjoy the texture of the plump shrimp.

Biryani" is a rice dish that is eaten in the Muslim cultural sphere in South Asia, including India, as well as in regions outside of India. It is made by cooking or steaming rice with lamb, chicken, fish, vegetables, and various spices. At Kerala Kitchen, you can choose to have it served in the original unglazed "pots" or in steamed "kiri" tied with banana leaves. The "kiri" is a banana leaf that is tied and steamed. When the "kiri" is opened, the aroma of the banana leaves stimulates the appetite even more. It is served with pickles, pappad (bean crackers), and raita (yogurt salad), which are mixed together. Biryani" is made with "Jilakashala rice" (small rice) imported from Kerala, and different types of rice are used for different dishes.

Meals", the most popular set meal in Kerala

Meals, a popular set meal in Kerala that is often eaten in South India.

Meals" are a popular set meal in Kerala that is often eaten in South India. The colorful dishes are served in unglazed bowls, and you can feel your appetite being whetted through your sense of sight and smell the moment they are brought to your table. Meals are a set meal that includes a variety of South Indian dishes, including a spicy soup, side dishes, and pickles. South Indian curries are characterized by their low oil content, dryness, and aromatic aroma of roasted spices. Try mixing them a little to get the flavor you like. You can also break the pappad (bean crackers) into pieces and mix them in," the owner, Mr. Krishnan, kindly told us. Please enjoy the tactile sensation of breaking the pappad by hand. It is fun to see the taste change every time you mix it! As is the case with biryani, Kerala Kitchen offers the pleasure and joy of completing the dish on your own.

Original drinks that can only be found in Kerala

Lassi" is one of the most popular drinks in India!

The drink menu is also abundant, with cold drinks, hot drinks, and alcohol available. The taste of lassi varies from restaurant to restaurant. Kerala Kitchen's lassi is homemade from handmade yogurt, which gives it a rich yogurt taste, yet it has a refreshing taste. It makes you want to have another glass! It will make you feel like that.

Kudamkaraki" is a drink served in an original unglazed bowl covered with a banana leaf and served with a sugar cane straw.

They will start selling about 40 kinds of spices by weight as soon as they are ready. We are very much looking forward to the start of the weighing sale, where we can purchase the best spices according to our mood at the time.

In the casual conversations between customers and the staff, there seem to be hints on how to perfect your own taste on your plate. The fact that the restaurant makes you want to visit again may be the reason why it was selected as one of the "Asia Ethnic EAST 100 Best Restaurants 2022" on the food log. For a reminder of the summer that is gone, how about sweating it out with a spicy dish to refresh and recharge your energy? And how about welcoming autumn? We look forward to seeing you there.
