Enjoy the spectacular view in Hakkoda!

Hakkoda, with its magnificent high moorlands and treasure trove of alpine flora, is one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains. Hakkoda is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan, and is a very popular spot where visitors can fully enjoy the wonderful scenery of the four seasons. The autumn foliage season is not to be missed!

Hakkouda is the name of several mountains!

By the way, did you know that there is no single mountain called "Mt. Hakkoda" is the collective name for a number of mountains, including the 1,585-meter-high Daisaki (a large mountain), Maehidake ( Maetake), and Tamohidake ( Mt. Tamohama). It is known locally as "Hakkoda. I will refer to it as "Hakkoda" in this article as well.

When is the best time to see the autumn leaves in Hakkoda?

The color of the mountains usually begins to change around the summit in late September and the best time to see the colors is in early October. The best time to see the colors is from early to mid-October in the area from the middle of the mountain to the foot of the mountain. Plants found in Hakkoda include beech, oak, maple, and downy birch. During the fall foliage season, the mountains are beautifully colored with bright red and yellow hues. Then, in late October and November, the first snowflakes fall. In other words! If the timing is right, this is a very rare spot where you can see a collaboration of autumn leaves and snow.

The Hakkoda Ropeway is located in the northern part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, and you can easily climb from the base station to the summit station in about 10 minutes. Weather permitting, the ropeway offers spectacular views of Mutsu Bay, the Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas, the Tsugaru Plains, and Mount Iwaki, in addition to the mountains of Hakkoda.
The ropeway's hours of operation may be extended at certain times of the year, so you can enjoy the scenery at different times of the day according to your schedule. For more information, please visit the official Hakkouda ropeway website.

Strolling along the Hakkoda Gode Line

The word "goad" means "gourd" in English, and the walking course looks like a gourd, hence the name "Hakkouda Goad Line. The path is well-maintained and easy to walk, so anyone can easily enjoy a stroll. Ponds and swamps are scattered along the course, making it a perfect adventure through a treasure trove of alpine flora! There are two types of courses to choose from: a 30-minute course (about 1.0 km) or a 60-minute course (about 1.8 km), depending on your fitness level and other preferences. It is recommended that you wear shoes you are comfortable with!
