Monuments reproducing famous scenes from "Galaxy Express 999" and "Space Battleship Yamato," two of manga artist Leiji Matsumoto's masterpieces, are located along the main shopping street leading from Tsuruga Station to Kebi Jingu Shrine.
The reason for the monument has much to do with Tsuruga's history. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the "Europe-Asia International Liaison Train" that connected Tokyo and Paris ran through Tsuruga Port Station. This train was the shortest route to Europe, and was used by the Japanese delegation, including Shizo Kanaguri, at the Stockholm Olympics, the first time Japan participated in the Olympics. Today, the old Tsuruga Port Station building still remains and is used as the Tsuruga Railway Museum.
Tsuruga was one of the most famous "railroad and port towns" in Japan. The monument was installed in 1999 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the port of Tsuruga. A total of 28 monuments are located on both sides of the shopping arcade. You can find them on the road leading to Kibi Jingu Shrine on foot!
You can also find characters from "Galaxy Express 999" at the bus stops of the Tsuruga Shuttle Bus.
