What is Kuroishi Yosare, a summer tradition in Kuroishi?

Kuroishi Yosare is a summer tradition in Kuroishi, usually held in mid-August. Although there are various theories, the Kuroishi Yosare is said to be one of Japan's three major nagashi odori (flowing dances), along with Tokushima Prefecture's Awa Odori (Awa Dance) and Gifu Prefecture's Gujo Odori (Gujo Dance).

The Nagashi Odori dance, in which thousands of people dance through the streets of the city, is said to be one of Japan's three great Nagashi Odori dances!
Let us introduce you to the Kuroishi Yosare, which is filled with such enthusiasm.

Origin...

The origin of Kuroishi Yosare is said to be a love song sung about 500 to 600 years ago.
Koi Yosare Monument
It was especially popular in the late Edo period (1780s), when the Kuroishi Clan encouraged the performance as a measure to promote the economy. In the Kuroishi domain, samurai, farmers, and townspeople alike enjoyed dancing while wearing masks and costumes, regardless of their status. It was so popular that even people from the neighboring Hirosaki Clan, where Bon Odori dancing was often banned, came to participate.

It looks so fun that it makes me want to see what it was like back then.

What is the origin of the name?

Isn't it a little strange that Kuroishi Yosare is called "Yosare" instead of "XX Odori"?

There are various theories about the origin of the word, but it is said to have come from the words, "Let go of your work and enjoy yourself" when there is a good harvest, and "Hurry up and leave this world" when the harvest is bad and people are suffering.

The etymology also suggests that people enjoy dancing the Kuroishi Yosare.

It is characterized by three dances! What kind of dance is "Kuroishi Yosare"?

Kuroishi Yosare has three main dances: Kumiodori, Nagashi Odori, and Mawari Odori.
Children dancing in perfect harmony
Kumiodori is a hand dance performed by several dancers, and the highlight is the perfectly matched choreography of each group. Nagashi Odori is a parade through the streets, and the Nakamachi Komise-dori street, lined with historic buildings, is filled with excitement.

Mawari Odori is danced in a circle in the middle of Nagashi Odori. Spectators are welcome to jump in and dance with the locals.
Mawari Odori, dancers of all ages and genders dancing together
Usually, Mawari Odori is held in the middle of Nagashi Odori, but there are days when Mawari Odori is the main part of the festival.

A perfect match of male-female interplay and Tsugaru-ben (Tsugaru dialect)! Let's learn about the songs!

There are four main songs played during Nagashi Odori and Mawari Odori: "Kuroishi Yosare," "Kuroishi Jinku," "Kuroishi Jyonkara," and "Tsugaru Jinku (Dodarebachi).
Kuroishi Yosare songs played on drums and shamisen
The charm of Kuroishi Yosare songs played on taiko drums and shamisen is the "live performance. Please enjoy Kuroishi Yosare with live music, which can be enjoyed only in Kuroishi.

The characteristic of Kuroishi yosare songs is that many love dialogues between a man and a woman and Tsugaru dialect are often used. Some of the songs were originally sung to weed out the weeds, and some of them are sad songs in memory of the prosperous days of the Sentoku family, the lords of Asaseishi Castle, which flourished in Kuroishi for about 350 years.
You don't need to know the meaning of the songs to enjoy them, but if you know the lyrics and the history of the dances, you may slip back in time to a distant past and relive the feelings of the people of that time. Detailed lyrics can be found on the Kuroishi City Tourist Association website, which will be introduced later.

Yukata style of Kuroishi Yosare

Kuroishi yosare's common yukata has a design of a sparrow and ears of rice. This is because the choreography of the Kuroishi Yosare includes the action of chasing away sparrows that come by the ears of rice.

Recently, each participating group has a different costume design, for example, the City Hall group has a checkered pattern with the city emblem. The matching costumes, sashes, sashes, kumikasa (straw hat), and sandals are all needed to complete the yosare costume!
