Torigoe Kannon is said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi in the 9th century, and some say that the temple was a popular place for pilgrims to Kannon in the latter half of the Muromachi period (1336-1573). It is also said that Torigoe Kannon was reconstructed by Morioka feudal lord Shigenobu Nanbu in the Edo period. The architectural style of the inner sanctuary of Kannon-do suggests that the inner sanctuary was built during this period.

There is also an unusual temple built using an iwaya (rock shelter) in the middle of Mt. Torigoe. It is known as the 27th stop on the pilgrimage to the 33 sacred Kannon temples in Nukabe, and is also designated as a Tangible Folk Cultural Asset of Iwate Prefecture. Please visit this sacred place.
