Aomori Tsugaru Peninsula, Aomori Prefecture Model course to visit the east side of the peninsula from Tatsutobizaki along the sea.

Togahama Town, Imabetsu Town, Yomogida Village

The area along Mutsu Bay, the northernmost tip of Honshu in Aomori Prefecture, offers spectacular views along the sea and many delicious foods including seafood.
We are now introducing a trip to the northernmost part of Honshu to search for the "best" of the Mutsu Bay area as "A Journey to Find the Best in the Northernmost Part of Honshu"!
This time, we will introduce 4 model courses of 2 days and 1 night, including both well-known places of interest and areas that will be the focus of much attention in the future.
The model courses use public transportation such as trains and buses as much as possible, and are also helpful for those who are not comfortable driving a rental car. (*Taxis will be used in some cases.)

This third course in this article is a model course that takes visitors along the sea coast of the Tsugaru Peninsula, located on the western side of Aomori Prefecture. This course starts from "Ryubizaki" where you can see the whole view of Tsugaru Strait to the east, and you can fully enjoy the scenery of the seaside.

10:30 Take the convenient Tsugaru Shared Ride Taxi "Wan-taku" or "Wan-taku Tentative Time Service

After getting off the Shinkansen at Okutsugaru-Mamabetsu Station, you will first head for Ryubisaki, the northernmost point of Tsugaru Peninsula. For transportation, take the convenient Tsugaru Shared Ride Taxi service called "Wan-taku" or "Wan-taku Tentative Service".
Wan-taku" taxis allow passengers to make reservations for boarding and alighting anywhere in the area, while "Wan-taku Teikyu-bus" taxis have fixed routes and stops, making them convenient for connecting to the Shinkansen and other trains. This time, we used the "Wan-taku" scheduled service on the way to and the "Wan-taku" on the way back from the Shinkansen. The "Wan-taku" service is available without a reservation, but capacity is limited, so advanced reservations are recommended if you want to be sure of getting on.

As of August 2023, the service will be in operation until March 31, 2024. Please check in advance if the bus will be in operation after that date.

11:15 Tatsutobizaki Lighthouse and Stairway National Road

Ryubisaki Lighthouse with its distinctive white round shape
Stairway National Highway surrounded by hydrangea (mid-July)
Arriving at Ryubizaki, we first went to the Ryubizaki Lighthouse, whose white color stands out against the blue sky. Surrounded on three sides by the sea and known as the "Cape of the Wind," Tatsuhobizaki Lighthouse has been selected as one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan and has become a symbol of the Tsugaru Straits.

And near Tatsutobizaki is National Route 339. This is a national highway, but it is the only "stairway national highway" in Japan that only pedestrians can pass through. Right in the middle of the stairway, there is a path that turns off to the side, and it is a viewpoint where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the view of the sea. (There is also a commemorative stamp nearby!)
Stairway National Highway is also famous for its hydrangeas, which are at their best from late July to late August. When we visited, the hydrangeas surrounding the road were in full bloom and very beautiful.
Tatsumi Bridge
There is also the "Ryumibashi Bridge" marked by a dragon. In fact, beyond the bridge is a hidden scenic spot.

The area beyond the bridge is called "Hill of Monuments," and as the name suggests, there are many monuments and song monuments. You can recall the history of Ryubizaki. The area around the monument hill is like a little garden in the air, as there are no tall buildings. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll.

From the top of the monument hill, you can look down on the contrast between the beautiful green gradation of the coastline and the blue of the Sea of Japan, and the path from the monument hill down to the road seems to lead to the sea. The path from the monument hill down to the road seems to lead down to the sea.

13:00 Have a bowl of seafood rice at Rest House Tatsutobi Jue Moriya!

Tuna Yukke Set Meal
Tatsutobi-Matsukawagarei pickles rice bowl set meal
At "Rest House Ryubi Sue Moriya" (Rest House Tattpi Sue Moriya), you can eat in front of the Ryubisaki Lighthouse, the best location from which to view Ryubisaki. This time, we ordered the tuna yukke set meal, which was filled with a large portion of tuna, and the Ryutobi matsugawagarei pickles on top of a bowl of rice. Tatsutobi matsukawa flounder is a high-end fish that is farmed using fresh water pumped up from the bedrock of the Seikan Tunnel.

The moment you put the Matsugawa flounder on rice in a bowl, the aroma of sesame seeds fills your mouth. The flavor of the flounder, which is marinated in the right amount, will become a habit as you bite into the aroma.
The tuna yukke-don is characterized by its thick fillet and well-seasoned marinade! The sweet sauce enhances the original flavor of the tuna and goes well with rice. It is a dish that is filling and plentiful.

15:00 You can stay at the school! Kaikyo no Ie Horozuki

We stayed in the classroom of the first year class 1!
The school motto is displayed in the reception area!
For accommodations, the "Kaikyo no Ie Horozuki" is a renovated junior high school building that has been turned into an accommodation facility. The atmosphere is filled with nostalgia, with traces of the junior high school still remaining everywhere.

You can enjoy the excitement of staying at a school, with a retro and stylish atmosphere. In the lobby next to the reception office, there are old-fashioned school desks and pianos, as well as card games that you used to play in the old days.

The bath is a "calcium carbonate artificial hot spring," and it is a great place to take a hot spring bath. Breakfast and dinner are not included, so you will need to bring your own food or cook for yourself. We also recommend the ramen stores that can be reached on foot, which we will introduce later.
In the "cooking room" you can bring in your own ingredients and cook for yourself!
Aomori's local bread, English toast
For breakfast, we had English toast, a local bread loved by Aomori residents, which we had purchased in advance! The English toast, which is said to be unknown to Aomori residents, consists of two fluffy slices of bread with margarine and granulated sugar sandwiched in between, and is so delicious that you will want to crunch it down! In Aomori Prefecture, English toast is readily available at convenience stores and supermarkets. Please try it when you come to Aomori Prefecture!

16:00 Take a walk along the sea at Takanozaki on the Noritsuki Coast

We went there late in the morning before sunset.
Sunset from the bright red Nagisa Bridge
A five-minute walk from Kaikyo-no-ie Horozuki, Horozuki Kaigan Takanosaki is a place where you can feel the ocean close at hand. During the day, the two red bridges stand out against the clear emerald green sea, and at dusk, you will feel as if you have the sunset on the horizon all to yourself.

Since Takanosaki is located at the tip of a cape jutting out to the north, you can also enjoy the orange of the sunset and the blue of the blue sky, both at once. It is close to Kaikyo-no-ie Horozuki, so please enjoy the various views of the sea that change with the hour.

17:00 Scallop salt ramen at "Umi-no-Eki Takanosaki" restaurant!

Scallop salt ramen is filled with scallops!
For dinner, we had ramen at Umi-no-Eki Takanosaki, a restaurant close to Horozuki Beach Takanosaki and Kaikyo-no-ie Horozuki. There are also seafood rice bowls and Aomori's unique yakiboshi ramen, but I had the "scallop salt ramen". It has seaweed and a lot of scallops on top. The thin noodles in the lightly salty broth are well mixed with the scallop, and you can't stop eating! When you bite into the scallop, the umami flavor comes out gradually, giving the ramen a nostalgic, gentle taste.

Day 2 11:20 Enjoy famous tomatoes at Marche Yomogita

Rice omelet with lots of tomato sauce
Neapolitan with tomato sauce
Leaving Kaikyo no Ie Horozuki at a leisurely pace, we took a bus and a cab to Yomogita Village, famous for its tomatoes. Marche Yomogita" is a product center that sells processed products using tomatoes produced in Yomogida Village, especially ketchup made from ripe tomatoes with high sugar content like fruit. The museum also has a space where visitors can have lunch using these sweet tomatoes.

The restaurant offers a view of the ocean from the window in front of the restaurant, and many menu items are prepared using tomatoes grown in Yomogida Village. While there are keema curry, meat sauce, etc., this time I had the omelette rice and Neapolitan, which seemed to have more of a tomato flavor.
The omelette is filled with a tomato sauce that is served separately from the omelette, which is full of the flavor and sweetness of tomatoes. Cheese is also on top, allowing you to adjust the combination of the rich flavor of the tomato sauce, egg, cheese, and rice to your own liking.
The Neapolitan has a sweet taste and its smooth texture is so gentle on the palate that you can eat it with a crunch, and you will never get tired of it no matter how much you eat.

The lunch using Yomogida tomatoes is so good that you can't help but think, "This tomato is different from the others...! You can't help but think, "This tomato is different from the others...!

12:30 Beach walk at Tamamatsu Beach

Tamamatsu Beach
The Tamamatsu Beach is located near Marche Yomogita. The waves are calm and clear, and the shallow waters make it safe to play in. Even without a bathing suit, it feels good just to put your feet in! It is fun just to look for the many small shells that have fallen and are beautiful.
The large detached breakwater, which was built to prevent erosion, looks a bit like an island.

It would be nice to relax on the beach and listen to the sound of the waves while eating tomato-flavored gelato sold at Marche Yomogita.

13:30 Refresh yourself at Fureai Center Yomogi Onsen

Entrance to Yomogi Onsen
Inside the bathhouse of the Yomogi Hot Springs
After playing in the ocean, you may feel sticky from the sea breeze and sweat, and you may want to take a bath as soon as possible because there is sand you can't get rid of. Within walking distance of Tamamatsu Beach is the Fureai Center Yomogi Onsen! A large public bath and a sauna made entirely of hiba (Japanese cypress) are highly recommended.
The hot spring water in the large bath is "fountainhead" hot spring water, which has a strong composition that warms the body and is effective in relieving fatigue, making it perfect for tired bodies!

You can also rest in a Japanese-style room for a fee, which is just right for relieving travel fatigue.
There is a direct sales shop across from the building where you can buy soft-serve ice cream, which is perfect for after taking a bath!
(The direct sales shop is generally open from July to September.)

15:30 Last minute shopping at Village Station Yomogita!

Entrance to Village Station Yomogi
Lots of tomatoes from Yomogi Village!
(Direct sales are generally open around July and September.) Before boarding the train from Yomogida Station, we made one last stop at "Village Station Yomogoro". Here, too, you can buy Yomogida-mura's specialty tomatoes! You can also buy fresh vegetables and a wide selection of seafood from Mutsu Bay, which is fun just to look at. I found an onigiri (rice ball) here that was almost as big as two fistfuls of rice! It's so satisfying that you may want to buy one to eat on the Shinkansen on your way home! You can also buy Daifuku (rice cake made of mugwort) and a cafeteria to fill up your stomach.

*Tomatoes grown in Yomogida are generally available from late June to late September. Please note that the season may change due to bad weather and other factors.
