History of the Kashiwa Festival

The Kashiwa Festival is a summer tradition for Kashiwa citizens that attracts about 700,000 people every year. The origin of the Kashiwa Festival can be traced back more than 40 years to August 1969, when the city's lumber center and the Kashiwa Ginza Street Shopping Association joined forces to sponsor the famous Tokushima "Awa Odori" dance. Later, people from the shopping association in front of Kashiwa Station gathered further and the "Kashiwa Commercial Festival" was held. In 1978, the name was changed to "Summer Festival Kashiwa Festival" under the slogan of "Fureai Yorokobi Minna Tsudo" as a hometown festival created not only with stores but also with many citizens. The "Kashiwa Festival" was born in this year. The festival was born out of the daily activities of the city and has grown together with the city, sharing the joy of life with the people. We hope that you will join the Kashiwa Festival and experience it for yourself! This year's festival will be held on July 27 (Sat) and 28 (Sun). The festival this year will be held on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, and will be crowded with many people.

The lively "Kashiwa Odori" dance

Since 1969, the Kashiwa Odori dance was created as an alternative to the Awa Odori dance. Along with the annual Awa Odori, Kashiwa Odori was choreographed to the tune of Kashiwa Odori and performed by approximately 400 people from the Kashiwa Mindaori Federation and other groups at the first "Kashiwa Commercial Festival" in 1971. The Kashiwa Shimin Shimbun solicited lyrics for the Kashiwa Odori from citizens. The lyrics were compiled into a single lyric based on the three selected works and completed by Jushio Oka, a popular composer at the time. This year, a remixed version of the Kashiwa Odori dance, which was solicited to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the city's incorporation, will be performed as "Shin☆Kashiwa Odori" with simple choreography, and together with many citizens, the finale of the Kashiwa Festival (both days at the west exit) will be enlivened.

Mikoshi parade

In addition to the Kashiwa Odori and Shin☆Kashiwa Odori, the "Mikoshi Parade" is another highlight of the festival.
On Sunday, visitors can see a powerful parade of children's mikoshi (portable shrines), coats of arms, a citizens' mikoshi (portable shrine), the mikoshi of Katori Shrine and Kashiwa Shrine, and the mikoshi of Mantoh Shrine. The festival also features stages on the east and west sides of the city, symbolizing Kashiwa as a town of music and Kashiwa as a sports town.
