The new Tachineputa is now on display!

On Sunday, August 4, 2024, the Goshogawara Tachineputa Festival will begin. Last year, after overcoming the Corona disaster, Goshogawara Tachineputa was held for the first time in four years and was a great success. This year, a new 23-meter-long Tachineputa will make its debut, and the festival will be more powerful than last year! We are very excited about this year's event!

The story of the revival of Tachineputa, which almost disappeared after the war, is also hot!

From the mid-Meiji period to the early Taisho period, Tachineputa became a symbol of the power of the wealthy merchants and landowners of Goshogawara, who competed with each other to build floats for their summer festivals in terms of their size. Neputa floats became larger and larger, sometimes exceeding 30 meters in height. As electricity became widespread in the Showa period (1926-1989) and electric cables began to be strung around them, they gradually became smaller and smaller, and with the war and postwar fires, they almost disappeared from existence. In the 1950s, the operation of neputas resumed, but large neputas never made their appearance.

Time passed, and in 1993, several blueprints and photographs of the giant neputa were discovered. This event led to the appearance the following year of a 7-meter-high giant neputa for a citizens' play about Goshogawara, much to the delight of the local people.

After a long time, the desire for a giant neputa grew, and in 1996, a group of volunteers gathered to revive the giant neputa in earnest. The members of the "Tachineputa Restoration Association" gathered on the banks of the Iwaki River with hand-made lunches. The production was a continuous process of trial and error. With only a few materials available, the members used their imagination to create a tall neputa, and they made progress step by step, drawing on their experience from the previous year in creating a 7-meter neputa.

When the funds brought in by the members ran out, Goshogawara citizens donated more money than expected. In addition, there was a lot of support from people who wanted to see the revival of Tachineputa.

The result was the 16-meter-high Tachineputa "Musha. News of the completion of the giant neputa was broadcast nationwide, and many people came to see it displayed on the banks of the Iwaki River. Now, the big wheels for the revival of the giant neputa finally began to turn.

The following year, 1997, we were asked to exhibit our work at the "Katsusai Aomori Grand Festival" to be held at the Tokyo Dome in December 1998, and we decided to produce Tachineputa again. This led to the decision to operate this Tachineputa at the 1998 summer festival, and from that year on, it was named the "Goshogawara Tachineputa" and has been operated every year as the summer festival of Goshogawara City.

The locals recommend the highlight of the festival, "Going Out to Battle"!

Before 6:00 p.m., the walls of the Tachineputa Pavilion open and the Tachineputa slowly steps out of the building. You can only see Tachineputa coming out of the building during the festival. It is interesting to see how the building was built for Tachineputa.

If you are not sure where to watch Tachineputa, I recommend the place where Tachineputa is coming toward you. 20m or more Tachineputa is coming closer and closer, and its power is amazing. Please check the course of the tour.
Don't miss the sight of the Tachineputa setting out from the Tachineputa pavilion!
On the last day of the festival (August 8), three of them will be positioned at the intersection so that they face each other. This is called "Omiai" by the locals. At 19:00, the last of the three Tachineputa will be the first to start. The remaining two will bid farewell to the last one, and finally the Goshogawara Tachineputa begins.

Because Tachineputa is so large, we tend to focus on the top, but let's pay attention to the music, the jumpers, and the people pulling the Tachineputa and feel the dynamism of the Goshogawara Tachineputa! You will surely enjoy it even more! There will also be a mid-size Tachineputa parade for parents and children to participate in, and food events will be held during the festival. You can see the big Tachineputa, of course, but how about experiencing the atmosphere of the festival created by the local people?
On the last day of the festival, three Tachineputas come together for "Omiai" before the performance.
