You can see a demonstration of Kanto! What is the Akita City Folk Performing Arts Center?

At the Akita City Folk Performing Arts Museum (nicknamed "Neburi Nagashi Kan"), a 15-minute walk from JR Akita Station, members of the Akita City Kanto Association will demonstrate the performance of Kanto on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays through October 27 (Sun.).

Time】13:30〜14:10〜
[Place】Akita City Folk Performing Arts Museum 1F Exhibition Hall

Even if you cannot come during the Kanto season, you can feel close to the Kanto in a different way from the actual performance. The 12-meter-long "O-Waka" reaches the ceiling, so the 9-meter-long "Naka-Waka" is used for the demonstration. The pole is extended to the very edge of the ceiling using five jointed bamboos (about 1.2m long to change the height of the pole), and the audience can enjoy the realistic sight of the actors manipulating the large, flexible pole and the live musical accompaniment. Seating is unreserved, so it may be difficult to see from some places, so early entry is recommended.

Corner to try making a miniature Japanese lantern

There is also a challenge corner where visitors can actually try their hand at making a mini Kanto. Mini Kanto are smaller than the actual size of the lanterns that will be presented to children on the day of the festival. However, it is surprisingly difficult to actually hold it, so we encourage you to give it a try! In the exhibition hall on the first floor, there is a permanent display of Akita's festivals, panels of the floats of the Tsuchizaki Shinmyoja Festival, and Bonten, etc. The exhibition rooms on the second and third floors introduce Akita's folk performing arts with related materials and video clips.

Former Kaneko Family Residence, a tangible cultural property of Akita City

The former Kaneko Family Residence is located next to the Neburi Nagashi Museum. The Kaneko family established a pawnshop and used clothing business in the late Edo period, and then a wholesale trade of kimono and thick fabrics (cotton and hemp fabrics) in the early Meiji period (1868-1912). In 1996, the owner donated the building to Akita City, and the following year it was designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Akita City as a valuable building retaining the traditional architectural style of the late Edo period. The storehouse is used for exhibitions and concerts, and the Japanese-style room, which was added in 1900, can be used for hobby classes and small gatherings. Visitors to the Neburi Nagashi Museum are welcome to stop by for a free tour!
