The Haneda Matsuri, or "Haneda Festival," held on the last Saturday and Sunday of July at Haneda Shrine in Tokyo's Ota Ward, is a very lively summer festival that attracts more than 3,000 people carrying portable shrines and 30,000 visitors.

Sunday, July 27, 2025! Haneda Festival.

All days are rain or shine.

The highlight of this year's festival is the first time in six years that a palanquin parade is held to "commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Showa period. The Showa period began on December 25, 1926, and the year 2025 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Showa period.

A procession of imperial carriages

A palanquin is a "imperial carriage with a phoenix decoration on the roof" and is considered a noble vehicle. On the other hand, mikoshi is a vehicle used to carry the "sacred body" and is carried by people at festivals. While the mikoshi is carried by a person, the imperial palanquin is usually pulled by a car or oxen.

Haneda Festival Miya-Dashi

Let's go see the famous "Yokota" of Haneda Festival!

The Haneda Festival portable shrine is commonly called "Yokota" (meaning "to carry" in Japanese), and is carried in a large rolling motion with the portable shrine pushed 90 degrees to the right and left. When the person on the right rises, the person on the left crouches down, and this is repeated alternately. This is a unique style of carrying that imitates a boat bobbing in the waves, and is unique to Haneda, which prospered as a fishing town in the olden days.

Joint parade of portable shrines in the town (Mikoshi Parade)

On Sunday afternoon, 14 portable shrines from 14 town councils parade through the streets of Yokota for nearly three hours.
Flight attendants from All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines will be invited from Haneda Airport, one of the Ujiko, to add color to the parade. This is probably the only festival in all of Japan where so many flight attendants from each airline company participate.

Haneda Sojinja, the general guardian of Haneda

The "Ujigami Shrine of Haneda," revered by those in the aviation industry

Haneda Shrine is the guardian deity of the entire Haneda area, including Haneda Airport. The shrine is highly revered by airline companies and those involved in aviation, and is visited by people throughout the year to pray for air safety and flight safety.
Many people dedicate prayer ema (votive picture tablet) to pray for the success of pilots and cabin attendants!
In 1861, when the smallpox epidemic broke out, the Tokugawa shogun Iesada paid a visit to the shrine to pray for the cure of the disease, and was healed. The "Haneda Fujizuka" on the grounds of the shrine is a symbol of the shrine's prosperity. Sengen Shrine is enshrined at the top of Haneda Fuji Mound (a cultural asset of Ota Ward), which is located in the precincts of the shrine. The deity of Sengen Shrine, Kihanasakuyahime-no-Mikoto, is said to have the divine virtues of ensuring easy childbirth and giving birth to a child.
