Night view from JR Obasute Station

One of the three best train views in Japan

Suddenly, have you ever heard of "Japan's Three Great Train Window"? And do you know where each of them is located? The answer is...

Hokkaido: Nemuro Main Line: Over the Karikachi Pass *Now closed.
Nagano Prefecture:Shinonoi Line JR Yatte Station
Miyazaki Prefecture:Hisatsu Line Yadake Crossing
One of these lines has been closed down, making it in effect "Japan's Two Great Train Window," but the JR Yatte Station introduced here is six stops away from JR Nagano Station, which is easily accessible from central Tokyo.
Located on a mountainside at an elevation of 551 meters, the platform offers a view of Chikuma City, Nagano City, and on clear days, the mountains of Hoku-shin in the distance.

Let's go see the night view from the "Night View Yosetsu" Joyful Train, one of the three Joyful Train windows in Japan!

The view from JR Yasuyasutemachi Station, known for its spectacular panoramic view, is best enjoyed during the daytime, but nighttime visits are also recommended. This time, I took a ride on JR East (*) "Night View Yasuyoshi" Joyful Train, which runs for a limited time only to enjoy the night view from JR Yasuyoshi Station.

The "Night View Yosetsu" is an all-seat reserved rapid train that runs approximately 22 km between JR Nagano Station and JR Yosetsu Station, with only one stop on the way, JR Shinonoi Station. The train car is the same as the "Resort View Furusato," which is also Joyful Train ride, with large windows and spacious seat pitch to enjoy the train window.

The Joyful Train is not just a means of transportation, but a train with various fun features that make the "ride" itself the purpose of the trip.

One of the features of this train is its large windows. You can fully enjoy the view from the train windows.
The train departs from JR Nagano Station and takes only 35 minutes to the final destination, JR Otesute Station, where you can purchase commemorative goods.
The train rushes through the city of Nagano at night, arriving at its destination, JR Yasuyasute Station, at 19:22.

As we alighted at the platform, we were greeted by a pleasant night breeze and a chorus of frogs. It seemed that the frogs had come out because the rice paddies had just been flooded. As I turned my gaze outside the platform, I saw countless city lights shining in the darkness, as if scattered with small jewels. Chikuma City spread out in the foreground and Nagano City in the background.

The observation map on the platform shows the approximate location of the train.
Volunteers on the platform offer guided tours of the night view, so you can learn more about the night view, and we encourage you to participate.
In the station building, a local miso brewery offered miso soup and amazake (sweet sake), and there was also a special store. You can buy amazake and miso for souvenirs.

Departure time for the return trip was 20:29, and we spent about an hour enjoying the night view and listening to the tour guide before returning to JR Nagano Station.
Incidentally, on the return trip, the lights in the train are partially turned off shortly after departure from JR Otesute Station to make it easier to view the night scenery. Seats with a night view are Seat A. Please refer to this when you make your reservation.
