We will do it again this year! Nagaoka Fireworks!
The Nagaoka Matsuri Grand Fireworks Festival, one of the three major fireworks festivals in Japan, will be held again in 2024!
The event will be held on August 2 (Fri.) and 3 (Sat.), 2024.
There will be no free seating again this year, only paid seating.
Also, please note that due to construction work on the Chosei Bridge, there will be no Niagara at the Chosei Bridge!
The meaning behind the Nagaoka Fireworks
It originally started on September 14 and 15, 1879, when people involved in prostitutes contributed funds to each other and set off 350 fireworks at the Sente-cho Hachiman-sama Festival.
However, in 1938 (Showa 13), it was forced to be canceled due to the war.
Then came the most tragic summer day in the history of Nagaoka.
On August 1, 1945, a huge number of B-29 bombers hit the dark sky and bombed the city for 1 hour and 40 minutes starting at 10:30 pm, turning 80% of the old city area into a burnt field.
1,488 precious lives were lost in the blazing flames.
The nightmarish devastation as far as the eye could see left people trembling with unspeakable grief and indignation.
One year after the air raid, on August 1, 1946, the "Nagaoka Reconstruction Festival," the predecessor of the Nagaoka Festival, was held.
The citizens of Nagaoka were comforted and encouraged by this festival, and they joined hands firmly to rebuild their city with an indomitable spirit of defiance.
Even today, in the spirit of "consolation, reconstruction, and peace," the "White Chrysanthemum" is launched at 10:30 p.m. on August 1, and on August 2 and 3, a No. 10 shell is launched as a "prayer for consolation and peace" before the start of the fireworks display.
What are the highlights of the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival?
~Fireworks for reconstruction and prayer for the recovery, the Phoenix

The "Shosanshakudama" is the symbol of the Nagaoka Fireworks and has a blooming width of 650 meters.
In addition to the size and color, the most notable feature is the sound!
The ear-piercing sound of the explosion and the impact on the body are powerful enough to be felt!
~Fireworks for reconstruction, Phoenix

The "Phoenix Fireworks for Recovery," a fireworks display with a launch width (total length) of approximately 2 km and lasting for approximately 5 minutes.
The fireworks were launched in the hope of reviving the area like a phoenix after the Chuetsu Earthquake in October 2004.
A golden phoenix shaped by fireworks flutters powerfully in the night sky.
It is also famous for being launched to the tune of the famous song "Jupiter.
The Phoenix Fireworks for Revival is a firework display to encourage people who were injured by the earthquake and other disasters and to pray for the earliest possible recovery.
In January of this year, which marks 20 years since the Great Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake, the Noto Peninsula Earthquake occurred and left a huge mark on Ishikawa and Noto.
In 2024, we will deliver the "20th version" of "Fireworks Phoenix 2024" from Nagaoka to everyone in Japan to support Ishikawa and Noto!

The best place to see the fireworks
It changes depending on the type of fireworks. We recommend the area upstream of Chosei Bridge for viewing the Shosan Shakudama, between Chosei Bridge and Otte Ohashi Bridge for viewing the main launching site fireworks, and downstream of Otte Ohashi Bridge for viewing the Phoenix fireworks.
There will be extensive traffic restrictions on the day of the festival. Please allow plenty of time for your visit.
