Introduction to Shiozawa-ori

Shiozawa textiles have been handed down in Oku-Echigo, the land of snow and folk tales, for a thousand years.

The Shiozawa district of Niigata Prefecture, known for its deep snow, is famous for its hemp fabrics, and the low temperature and high humidity of the snowy country is ideal for handling hemp threads, which tend to break when dried during spinning, twisting, and weaving.
There are four types of Shiozawa-ori fabrics, "Echigo Kamifu," "Shiozawa Tsumugi," "Honshiozawa," and "Natsu-Shiozawa," which were created with unique techniques and wisdom utilizing the nature of snow country, and the traditional techniques handed down from ancient times have been handed down by human hands and most of the process operations are still being made the same.

Shiozawa Tsumugi and Hon-Shiozawa are designated as national traditional crafts, and Echigo-Uefu is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and designated as a nationally important intangible cultural property.

The Shiozawa Tsumugi Memorial Museum, the center of "weaving culture," presents traditional techniques and the charm of the culture in one place.

Weaving experience to feel the traditional culture of Shiozawa textiles

At the Shiozawa Tsumugi Memorial Museum in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, visitors can experience Shiozawa-ori weaving.

From thread making to weaving, many hands are involved in the process of weaving to completion.
Using a handloom called "Koki," which was perfected in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), visitors can experience authentic weaving using the silk threads used for Shiozawa-ori and make their own original handicrafts while experiencing the tradition.

In addition to the weaving experience, there are many other hands-on activities that anyone, young or old, can enjoy, such as weaving coasters, pasting pictures, and other art activities using woven fabrics. The time required is from 15 minutes (varies depending on the experience menu).

*Reservations are not required for the experience, but it may be crowded, so we recommend that you make a reservation through our website or call us for more information.
