Otaru, a city of history and canals. Today, we will introduce you to Mt. Tengu in Otaru City. Otaru Tengu is a symbolic mountain of Otaru with an elevation of 532.4 meters. It takes about 17 minutes from Otaru Station by local bus. The nearest bus stop for the Mt. Tengu ropeway is located at the end of a steep slope through the city center, where the bus seems to suffer a bit at the end. The ropeway, with a capacity of 30 passengers, connects the 735-meter-long mountain from the foot of the mountain to the summit in about 4 minutes.
Unfortunately, due to the yellow sand, the city and the sea were hazy that day, but on a clear day, you can see the nostalgic cityscape and the blue Ishikari Bay in the background, as shown in the photo below.

When you step out of the summit station, you will be greeted by a "nose-flapping tengu". Legend has it that tengu have magical powers and that touching their long noses will ward off evil and make wishes come true. Next to the shrine, there are instructions on how to stroke the nose according to what you wish for, so why not make a wish and stroke it?
In addition to "Namae Tengu-san," there are many other places to see Tengu, such as "Tengu no Kogeta," "Tenguyama Shrine," and "Tengu no Yakata (Museum of Tengu).

At the top of the mountain, there is TENGUU CAFE, named after the meaning of "Tengu" × "sky" as "the closest cafe to the sky in Otaru," where you can enjoy a meal or a drink at the bar counter with a magnificent view from Mt.
There is also a Tengu store where you can purchase Tengu-related lucky charms and Tenguyama-exclusive products that are only available here.
