Example of Privilege Double
On Tuesday, December 20, 2022, a new hotel, Mercure Hida Takayama, opened near JR Takayama Station! Mercure is an affiliate of Accor Hotels based in Paris, France, a brand with the concept of hotels that "allow you to fully enjoy the local charm" and "take advantage of the characteristics of the area". I actually stayed at the hotel in March, so I will introduce in detail what kind of hotel it is this time!

Enjoy the nature, history, hot springs, food, and hospitality of Hida Takayama with all your senses.

Inspired by the nature and culture of Hida Takayama, the Mercure Hida Takayama offers a space where traditional elements are expressed with a modern perspective and the European essence of the Mercure brand is incorporated. When you step inside, the first thing you will see is a powerful object that looks like a combination of parts of Hida furniture, and a variety of Hida Takayama antiques and art works displayed in the lobby. There is also a wonderful atmosphere at the entrance with a fireplace that looks like a sunken hearth. When checking in at the front desk, guests are greeted by a beautifully designed wooden chandelier inspired by traditional Takayama crafts.
Superior Floor
Privilege Floor
All 161 guest rooms have a modern and sophisticated design that incorporates local traditions and culture such as Hida dyeing and Yamanaka Japanese paper. The corridors of the basic Superior Rooms and the Privilege Rooms on the 7th and 8th floors are different from each other, and each floor has a completely different design, with wooden room number plates. The elevator halls are also boldly decorated with wood, and the room keys are also made of wood. The decorations and interior design of the hotel, which is made of wood, give you a sense of the long history and craftsmanship of the Hida region, which has been passed down from generation to generation.

Both rooms are the same size (22 square meters), but the Privilege Floor offers four privileges: a higher floor (7th or 8th floor), a wood interior design with a special attention to detail, an additional rain shower in the shower stall, and a coffee maker in the room. In addition, guests staying on the Privilege floor can use the hotel's private open-air baths for a special rate of 1,500 yen (45 minutes per use) instead of the usual 3,000 yen (45 minutes per use). Reservations are not required for the private open-air baths. Please inform the front desk upon check-in if you wish to use it.

If you look at the pictures of the rooms, you may think that you are looking for a mistake. You may think so, but the Superior rooms have carpeting all over the floor, whereas the Privilege rooms have a rug on top of the wood flooring, making them more woodsy and elegant.

Privilege Double

The room we stayed in this time is "Privilege Double"!

There are various types of rooms available, including double, twin, and triple rooms, but I stayed in a Privilege Double room! The colors and textures throughout the room are subdued. The double bed is 180 cm wide, so I was able to relax spaciously. I personally love Hida furniture, so it is nice to sit on a chair and relax while looking out the window at the night view. Since the rooms are equipped with a coffee maker, I recommend spending time with a cup of coffee in the morning.
180cm wide double bed! Wide!
There is no bathtub in the room, but those who prefer a proper soak in the bathtub will probably go to the large public bath, or you can take a quick shower at night and go to the large public bath in the morning...or you can use the bathtub separately. In the bathroom, I was surprised to see wooden toothbrushes and other amenities. I felt the hotel's attention to detail in this area as well. One point of concern is that there were no amenities for basic cosmetics such as face wash, lotion, or cleansing lotion, so women should be especially careful. There were none in the changing rooms of the large baths either, so be sure to bring what you need.

The large bathroom is located on the top floor, the 9th floor. The interior here is also richly decorated with wood, and the bathtub is spacious with beautiful blue tiles, allowing you to stretch your legs and relax while bathing. You can sometimes hear the sound of trains on the Takayama Main Line as you relax in the open-air bath on a sunny day. Since we did not have time to visit the private baths this time, we would like to cover them again the next time we have the chance.

Mercure Hida Takayama is located about a 4-minute walk from JR Takayama Station and a 10-minute walk to the old town of Hida Takayama, making it a perfect base for sightseeing. Why not stay at the new hotel on your next trip to Takayama?

Finally, a note for those visiting by car: Mercure Hida Takayama does not have free parking. If you park at the contracted parking lot, NB Parking Takayama Ekimae, and mention this at the hotel front desk, you will receive a discount coupon (parking service coupon) for 1,500 yen per night. The contracted parking lot is located a little closer to Takayama Station than the hotel (across from a yakiniku restaurant). It is not listed on the official website, so if you are in doubt, please contact the hotel directly.
