Two Days of Sendai's Hot Souls Adding Color to the Festival ~Sendai Suzume Odori

In May, when the zelkova trees lining the streets are covered with fresh greenery, Sendai becomes the most beautiful "City of Trees". The Sendai Aoba Festival, a period festival of the city of mori, is held to showcase the "chic of Date".

The festival will be held for two days: the "Yoimatsuri (evening festival)," which will be filled with the lively Sendai Suzume Odori dance, and the "Honmatsuri (main festival)," which will feature a gorgeous historical picture scroll including the parade of the portable shrine of Aoba Shrine, which enshrines Lord Date Masamune, the founder of Sendai, and the parade of 10 Sendai Yamahoko-no-Junko (floats).

This year, the 39th Aoba Festival will resume in earnest. The theme of this year's festival is "With Thanks... The Revival of the Date Period Festival. Please come and feel the passion and excitement of the people who love the Sendai Aoba Festival.

The "Yoimatsuri" is held on Saturday.

On this day, the city will be filled with the sounds of musical accompaniment and the Sendai Suzume Odori dance will be performed. The Sendai Suzume Odori dance will be performed along Jozenji Street, lined with zelkova trees that are representative of the City of Trees, as well as in the arcades lined with unique stores.

The "Hon-Matsuri" is held on Sunday.

The "Jidai Emaki (historical picture scroll) procession," the main highlight of the Sendai Aoba Matsuri, will be held, depicting the vitality and splendor of the feudal era. The gorgeous Sendai Yamaboko procession and the powerful Sendai Suzume Odori dance, which adds color and splendor to the festival, are truly a sight to behold.

The official mascots, "Aoba Suzunosuke" and "Suzume," will also liven up the Sendai Aoba Festival!

The official mascot, "Aoba Suzunosuke," is an 8-year-old boy who was born and raised in Sendai and loves delicious Miyagi rice. He is very cute, so please come and meet "Aoba Suzusuke.
Also, this year, "Suzume-ko 1000-nin Matsuriren," in which 1,000 baby Suzume decorate Jozenji-dori, will return for the first time in four years. The "Sendai Aoba Festival" will be held in earnest for the first time in four years! Please visit "Sendai, the City of Trees" in May when the leaves of the trees are fresh and beautiful.
