■Toshogu Shrine Festival

The Toshogu Gosai is held once every five years. (*This year's festival will be held on Sunday, April 16, 2023.) The procession of the large portable shrines under the cherry blossoms is a powerful and beautiful sight that overwhelms the viewer.
The portable shrine of Toshogu Shrine is said to be the largest in the Tohoku region during the Edo period (1603-1867).
It was carried from Edo to Sendai when the shrine was built 370 years ago, and has been carried by many townspeople and Sendai citizens ever since. The portable shrine is carried by changing carriers until it reaches Higashi Roku Elementary School (Kitaroku Elementary School in 2023), which used to be an excursion station, where the Shinto ritual is held.
