■Sendai Toshogu Shrine, a cherry blossom viewing spot recommended by JR Sendai Station employees.

When the cherry blossoms bloom, Sendai Toshogu Shrine is both solemn and gorgeous.
Sendai Toshogu Shrine, which we will introduce here, was founded in 1654 by the second lord of the Sendai domain, Date Tadamune. The shrine is dedicated to the famous Ieyasu Tokugawa as its deity. The shrine has a long history and is said to have been built on the site where Ieyasu Tokugawa rested under the guidance of Date Masamune. Four buildings, including the main shrine and one torii gate, are designated as national important cultural properties, and their architecture has been highly valued by future generations.
The official name of the shrine is "Toshogu," but it is called "Sendai Toshogu" to distinguish it from other Toshogu shrines.

■Toshogu Shrine Festival

Sendai Toshogu is the only Toshogu shrine in the country that was recommended as a shrine for Ujigami, or a deity of the shrine. The eight towns of Omachi, Sakanamachi, Tatemachi, Minamimachi, Yanagimachi, Kitame-machi, Some-machi, and Tamachi were designated as Ujiko-machi, centering on Gofudai-machi, where the vassals who moved from Yonezawa with the Date family lived, and it was decided that Ujiko-machi would carry the portable shrine and float on the Toshogu Goshorei, a festival held at the shrine.
The Toshogu Gosai is held once every five years. (*This year's festival will be held on Sunday, April 16, 2023.) The procession of the large portable shrines under the cherry blossoms is a powerful and beautiful sight that overwhelms the viewer.

The portable shrine of Toshogu Shrine is said to be the largest in the Tohoku region during the Edo period (1603-1867).
It was carried from Edo to Sendai when the shrine was built 370 years ago, and has been carried by many townspeople and Sendai citizens ever since. The portable shrine is carried by changing carriers until it reaches Higashi Roku Elementary School (Kitaroku Elementary School in 2023), which used to be an excursion station, where the Shinto ritual is held.

80 cherry trees including Someiyoshino and mountain cherry trees

The view of the red bridge "Goshinbashi" over the stream that runs through the shrine grounds and the Someiyoshino cherry trees is especially worth seeing. It is so beautiful that you can't help but let out a gasp. There are also weeping cherry trees that bloom later in the season, so you can enjoy viewing cherry blossoms for a longer period of time.
Sendai Toshogu Shrine is located one stop from Sendai Station on the JR Senzan Line at Toshogu Station. It takes only about 3 minutes to get there, so you can drop by quickly when you have some free time.
On the fourth Sunday of every month, an antique market is held, attracting many visitors. Why not visit the historical "Sendai Toshogu Shrine," where you can feel the life of the local community?
