With spring gradually approaching in Hokkaido, the cherry blossom season is coming to Goryokaku in Hakodate. Goryokaku is surrounded by cherry blossoms in full bloom, and the best part is that visitors can enjoy cherry blossom viewing not only from the ground, but also from above, from the adjacent Goryokaku Tower, which overlooks the star-shaped fortress. The sight of the historic landscape enveloped in cherry blossom colors is a unique attraction of Goryokaku at this time of year. Spring comes to Goryokaku

In the past, the best time to view the cherry blossoms in Hakodate was from late April to early May, but in recent years, due to the influence of temperatures, they are often at their peak in April.
The "Special Historic Site Goryokaku" is home to approximately 1,500 cherry trees, mostly Someiyoshino. In spring, the park is tinged with pale pink and is crowded with citizens and tourists from all over the country. Just by walking around the park, visitors can feel the spring atmosphere and pleasant air all over their bodies.

Enjoy cherry blossoms on the ground and at the observatory

The cherry blossoms of "Special Historic Site Goryokaku" can be enjoyed not only from the ground, but also from the Goryokaku Tower, which stands adjacent to the park. The view from Goryokaku Tower, which stands adjacent to the park, is a must-see. Goryokaku Tower is 107 meters high, and the second floor of the observation deck is 90 meters high. Looking down from this Goryokaku Tower, one can see the entire star shape of Goryokaku.

Don't forget to keep warm when viewing the cherry blossoms at night!

Every year, during the cherry blossom season, the park is illuminated with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) lights between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. (In 2025, the lights will be illuminated on April 19, 2025).
(In 2025, the event will be held from April 19 (Saturday) to May 6 (Tuesday, substitute holiday).
Warm clothing is essential to enjoy the nighttime cherry blossoms at Goryokaku.
Even though it is spring, many days in Hakodate at this time of year get much colder at night, and it is especially cold during the illumination hours. A cardigan, lightweight down jacket, gloves, scarf, or other warm-weather accessories will make you comfortable. It is recommended that you bring warm clothes to enjoy the cherry blossoms at night.

Taste the cherry blossoms while experiencing history

Special Historic Site Goryokaku, now known as "Goryokaku Park," is a Western-style castle built at the end of the Edo period and is familiar to history buffs as the site of the last battle of the Boshin War, where the former shogunate forces led by Takeaki Enomoto and Toshizo Hijikata fought against the new Meiji government.
It has also appeared in various movies, dramas, and manga.
On the second floor of the Goryokaku Tower Observation Deck, there is a historical exhibition space where visitors can learn about the origins of Goryokaku and what it was like in those days. By experiencing the history as well as the cherry blossoms, visitors will be able to feel the unique charm of Goryokaku even more deeply.
