Abashiri City is located on the northeast coast of Hokkaido at latitude 44 degrees north.
Abashiri City is famous for its ice floes that come to the Sea of Okhotsk in winter, and the sight of pure white drift ice floating in the sea is truly spectacular!
Hokkaido is the only place in Japan where you can see the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, which is said to be the southern limit of drift ice in the northern hemisphere! The drift ice is said to be the southern limit of drift ice in the northern hemisphere, and can only be seen in Hokkaido, with limited areas in the east of Hokkaido such as Monbetsu, Abashiri, Utoro and Rausu.
It is said that the best chance of seeing drift ice is from mid February to early March, but on some days you can see white drift ice filling the ocean, and on other days it may drift away, depending on the weather.
It is said that the excitement of actually seeing the ice floes is greater because it is not something that can always be seen.
The Abashiri Icebreaker "Oorora," the world's first icebreaker built for sightseeing purposes, is a powerful and impressive vessel that breaks and crushes ice as it goes, and is 45 meters long and 10 meters wide with a maximum capacity of 400 passengers. Because it is so large, there is little swaying, making it safe for those who are worried about getting seasick.

What is drift-ice?

Until the drift ice arrives

Drift ice is born along the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk and is carried away by wind, waves, and ocean currents, and comes to the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in eastern Hokkaido, changing its shape as it is scraped, reduced in size, and enlarged.
The average thickness is about 1 to 2 meters, and the peak season is said to last about a month from mid-February.

Phytoplankton is carried along with the drift ice. In spring, zooplankton that feed on this phytoplankton also increase, enriching the fishing grounds.
Many creatures, such as the Japanese pond snail (clione), which feeds on the plankton, also come under the ice floes.
The bounty carried by the drift ice provides an abundance of food, which attracts delicious fish in the spring, and the Sea of Okhotsk is blessed with abundant seafood.

Mysterious white drift ice

Even in good weather, the drift ice can move dramatically in a short period of time as it is swept away by the waves.
The shape and location of the drift ice changes every day, even from morning to afternoon, so you will never see the same drift ice, and you will only be able to see it at that time.
You will not know if you will be able to see the drift ice until the day of your visit, but the contrast between the blue and white of the sea and the drift ice is a mysterious beauty that is hard to describe!
