Only in an area with heavy snowfall! Experience the kamakura!

Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture, has opened "Kamakura no Sato 2023 (Restaurant Kamakura Village).
During the opening period until February 26, 26 kamakura will be built in the facility and visitors can enjoy the view of giant kamakura standing in a row, as well as experience eating hot pot in a kamakura.

I experienced the "meal plan lunchtime" on the first day of opening!

*The editorial staff of and trip. experienced the facility on January 20, the first day of its opening.
Although it was a weekday, the park was very crowded with visitors from inside and outside of the prefecture as well as from overseas, and there were even some reporters covering the opening day.
After taking a temperature and disinfection test, visitors went through the reception desk and were guided to the kamakura, which was available for use.
Due to infection control measures, the kamakura can only be used by up to four people. You have to bend down to get through the entrance, but the inside is spacious enough for women to stand up and spread their arms.

We were so excited to see the kamakura that we entered for the first time that we took pictures and talked about it while our meals were being brought to us.

The meal menu is "Noroshi-nabe, rice balls and pickled nozawana

Noroshi-nabe, named after the Noroshidai on Mt. Kuroiwa behind Kamakura-no-sato, is a miso-based hot pot using many local vegetables including Iiyama's traditional vegetables, and Miyuki pork, which is hard to find outside of the prefecture.
The tender meat and the light nabe went very well together, and we finished off the meal with onigiri (rice balls).

The day was sunny and the temperature rose during the day, but there was a breeze and it was chilly outside.
The inside of the kamakura, surrounded by snow and in the shade, might give the impression of being cold, but surprisingly it was not cold at all, and when we lit the fire and ate the nabe, we even started to sweat.

How to make a kamakura

The 26 kamakura, including the kamakura shrines, are made with the cooperation of local residents, but the way they are made is a little different from other areas. The traditional kamakura, known in Akita and other regions for centuries, are made by making a mound of snow and digging inside. The igloos used by the Inuit are famous for being made by piling up snow blocks. In kamakura-no-sato, snow is compacted around a giant balloon, and then a doorway is made and the balloon is pulled out from there to efficiently create a kamakura.

The walls of the kamakura are nearly one meter thick, so that even if you enjoy a pot inside, it will not melt easily.

Lighted Kamakura
At the far end of the front entrance to the kamakura village, there is a bright red torii gate and the "kamakura shrine.
In the evening, all the kamakura, including the mini kamakura on both sides leading to the shrine, were lit up, creating a fantastic view that was different from that of the daytime.

There are also many activities! Web reservations recommended for restaurants!

In addition to dining, visitors can try snowmobile rides and snow rafting, which involves pulling a rubber boat on a snowmobile. (For a fee, depending on snow conditions, these activities may not be available.)
This area is a farming village, and in summer there are rice fields all over the area, but children and adults alike can enjoy activities such as riding through the snowy landscape as far as the eye can see. There is also a sledding course. The seemingly gentle slopes are very impressive when sledding.
