The "Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival," a major winter event held in Yunishigawa Onsen, Tochigi Prefecture, will be held from January 30 (Fri.) to March 1 (Sun.), 2026. Various events will be held at three venues in the hot spring resort (Sawaguchi riverside, Heike no Sato, and Yunishigawa Mizunogo Snow Park), allowing visitors to enjoy the entire Yunishigawa hot spring resort area.

About Yunishikawa Onsen

Yunishigawa Onsen is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and is said to have been a hot spring where fallen Heike warriors who were defeated in the "Battle of Dannoura" at the end of the Heian Period (794-1185) and escaped from the battle healed their wounds. Along the valley of the Yunishigawa River, from which the hot spring area takes its name, you will find historic hot spring inns and private homes, and you can enjoy the atmospheric riverside scenery. Recommended gourmet foods include sunken hearth cooking, river fish and wild vegetable dishes, and other satoyama delicacies that will relax your mind!

Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival" recognized as Japan Night View Heritage

The illumination of the miniature kamakura at the Sawaguchi riverside site, a popular event of the "Kamakura Festival" held in Yunishigawa Onsen, is a must-see spot when you visit Yunishigawa Onsen. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the festival, hundreds of mini kamakura are lit by candlelight, creating a magical world. This spectacle has been recognized as a "Heritage of Historical and Cultural Night Views" by Japan Night View Heritage.

Light up "Heike no Sato" (Village of the Heike)

At "Heike no Sato," where you can learn about the history of the Heike family, who were related to Yunishikawa Onsen, you can see not only a miniature kamakura but also a large kamakura! The kamakura at "Heike no Sato" are lit up every day. The snow piled up on the thatched-roof old houses is so atmospheric that you may feel as if you have time-traveled back to the old world.

Heike Akari" is being held at the same time at "Heike no Sato", which is inspired by the glittering life of the Heike family in the Heian period. Visitors can enjoy the Japanese lights of bamboo lanterns and bamboo balls, which make for great photo opportunities!
