The "Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival," a major winter event held in Yunishigawa Onsen, Tochigi Prefecture, will be held from January 27 (Fri.) to February 26 (Sun.), 2023.

Various events will be held at three venues in the hot spring resort area. During the day, a large kamakura will appear and local delicacies such as oshiruko (sweet red-bean soup) will be served. At night, "mini kamakura" are lit up.

About Yunishikawa Onsen

Yunishigawa Onsen is a hot spring located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is said that Heike warriors who escaped defeat in the "Battle of Dannoura" at the end of the Heian Period healed their wounds in this hot spring. Along the valley of Yunishigawa River, historic hot spring inns and private homes stand side by side, and visitors can enjoy the scenery along the river.

Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival" recognized as Japan Night View Heritage

A popular event of the "Kamakura Festival" held at Yunishigawa Onsen is the lighting up of the "miniature kamakura" on the Sawaguchi riverbed! On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the festival, hundreds of mini kamakura are lit by candlelight, creating a fantastic world in the village. This scene has been recognized as a "Night View Heritage of History and Culture" by the Night View Heritage of Japan.

Light up "Heike no Sato" (Village of the Heike)

At "Heike no Sato," where visitors can learn about the history of the Heike family, which has ties to Yunishikawa Onsen, the village will be illuminated in the evening. It is quite atmospheric with snow piled up on old houses with thatched roofs! It is as if you have time-traveled to the old world.
