The Beginning of Atami Plum Garden
The Atami Plum Garden was built as a walking park in conjunction with "Kyuukaikan," Japan's first hot spring medical treatment facility, after Nagayo Sensai, a Ministry of Home Affairs official, advocated that "hot springs are effective against illnesses not only because of the salt and iron contained in them but also because of the appropriate exercise" (from "Atami Fudoki" Plum Garden Record). The park was built as a promenade park in conjunction with the country's first hot spring medical treatment facility, the Kyuukan. The park has a long history dating back to 1886, and is an important part of Atami, which prospered as a hot spring resort.
In commemoration of the Japan-Korea summit meeting held in Atami in 2000 between then Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea, the garden was completed in 2002, incorporating the traditional style and techniques of the Republic of Korea. Korean Garden
