The Atami Plum Blossom Festival will be held from January 10 (Sat.) to March 8 (Sun.), 2026, at the Atami Plum Garden, where 469 plum trees of 60 varieties will be in full bloom, including old plum trees over 100 years old. During the festival, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of red, white, and light red plum trees.

The Beginning of the Atami Plum Garden

The Atami Plum Garden was established in the Meiji era (1868-1912) by Nagayo Sensai, a Ministry of Home Affairs official, who advocated that "hot springs are effective against illnesses not only because of the salt and iron in them, but also because of the proper exercise" (from "Atami Fudoki" Umezono Ki), and was the first onsen medical treatment facility in Japan. The park was built as a promenade in conjunction with the country's first hot spring medical treatment facility, the Kyuukaikan. The park opened in 1886 and has a long history as an important part of Atami, which prospered as a hot spring resort. In commemoration of the Japan-Korea summit held in Atami in 2000 between then Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea, the garden was completed in 2002, incorporating traditional styles and techniques of the Republic of Korea.
