The Asahikawa Street Illumination has begun!

The festival will run from Saturday, November 26, 2022 to Sunday, March 5, 2023!

Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, has become a snowy winter landscape since the beginning of December.
The winter cold is severe, but the "Asahikawa Street Illumination" has started again this year!
The venues are five areas in the central city of Asahikawa, each with its own name.
Each area has a different image of illumination and a different atmosphere.

This year, each area has been rearranged to depict a different look, and new illuminations have been introduced.

Japan's first pedestrian-only street "Heiwadori Shopping Park": Friendly Illumination

Heiwa-dori Shopping Park, the starting point of the event, was the first permanent pedestrian street in Japan and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
This street stretches about 1 km from the JR Asahikawa Station and is the commercial center of Asahikawa City, and is the site of the Asahikawa Winter Festival held every February and the concurrent event, the It is also the venue for the Asahikawa Winter Festival held every February and the World Ice Sculpture Competition held at the same time.

Heiwa-dori Shopping Park, a 1km-long pedestrian paradise from north to south, is lined with a variety of specialty stores, restaurants, and many sculptures, making it aptly named Shopping Park.
This year, a panel-shaped motif illumination is new, and visitors can enjoy eight different types of sparkles, including monuments and waves!
In addition, the position of the illumination in the shopping park has been rearranged to create a slightly different atmosphere than last year.
Even if you have seen it before, please enjoy the difference this year.
Walking around the lights is also a great way to get some exercise in the winter.

Introducing the Greenway Illumination area from Heiwadori Shopping Park!

Beyond the shining blue and white "tree" is the illumination of the sculpture "Tower of Pioneering Image"!

Walking through the blue and white illumination of the tree in Heiwa-dori Shopping Park, you will see the 21-meter-high sculpture "Tower of the Pioneering Image" illuminated at the end of the path!
Here you will find the 7jo Greenway, a walking path surrounded by trees.
A little further down the road, on Article 8 Street, there is an illumination of a "hand" sculpture, and the sparkling appearance of Asahikawa's sculpture art is also a highlight of the festival.


Why not take a tunnel and be surrounded by a sea of dazzling lights?

The Green Street Illumination features a tunnel of light arches, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
The warm colors of these tunnels make them a popular photo opportunity!
There are also many nice cafes and restaurants around the greenway.
It is recommended to enjoy the view after warming up slowly with a meal or beverage.

In Tokiwa Park, which continues straight ahead from the greenway, there is a "Rotary Illumination" area.
The symbolic tower of the Tokiwa Rotary is illuminated with blue lights.
The lights express gratitude to the medical workers who are working hard to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, as well as a wish for the end of the disease.
