Awara Hot Spring Ashiyu

Awara Onsen, one of the 100 best hot springs in Japan!

Awara Onsen in Fukui Prefecture can be reached in about 4 hours from Tokyo Station by connecting the Hokuriku Shinkansen and local limited express trains. It is one of the best hot spring resorts in Fukui Prefecture and has been selected as one of the "100 Best Hot Spring Spas.
Awara Onsen is said to have begun in 1883 when hot spring water gushed out of an irrigation well for use in farmland. The quality of the spring is a saline earth salt spring that is said to be effective for rheumatism and chronic dermatitis, etc. Each facility in the hot spring resort has its own source, and the quality of the spring varies slightly depending on the source.

Awara Onsen is the perfect place for strolling around town!

The hot spring resort area is dotted with places where visitors can experience history and culture, such as the "Fujino Itsukuro Memorial Museum," which is designated as a national tangible cultural property, and the "Funatsu Onsen Yakushido," built in 1922, as well as places to enjoy gourmet food, such as "Yukemuri Yokocho," a retro Showa-style alley with food stall-style stores. There are many recommended sightseeing spots for city walkers.

Ashiyu, a footbath that relieves the fatigue of walking around town!

Walking around town will gradually tire you out, and at such times we recommend the free footbath "Ashiyu", which is a short walk from Awara Yunomachi Station on the Echizen Railway.

Located within the Awara Onsen Yunomachi Square, it is a luxurious footbath built of Fukui Prefecture's sakiya-style cypress using sakudani stone, and features a Taisho Romantic-inspired structure, a yukamuri tower modeled after the observation room of a former Awara Onsen ryokan, and stained glass windows inlaid with plum and iris designs in the yukamuri tower. The stained glass windows depicting plum blossoms and Japanese irises in the yukemuri tower are a distinctive feature.

At this Ashiyu, visitors can enjoy three different types of hot springs, two from the same source and one mixed with the other, and there are also five bathtubs, so visitors can enjoy the hot spring in various patterns. With a grassy plaza spread out in front of the bathhouse, you are sure to have a relaxing time.
